Action demand on Springhall housing

Springhall residents are concerned about the deteriorating state of the buildings and environment in the area.

Lack of close painting, flooded and icy balconies, back courts needing upgrade, broken lockups and walls, poor rubbish disposal facilities – are all contributing to the sense of neglect in Springhall. Unfortunately there the Council appears to have no early plans to tackle these matters.

Now, Robert Brown, local Rutherglen South Liberal Democrat candidate, has launched a campaign for a better Springhall and wants local views and issues.

Robert said: “Springhall is long overdue having an upgrade of the building fabric, closes and balconies, back courts and environment. People these days pay big rents and should get homes with a decent environment. Action by the Council is long overdue.”

Mobile Phone Mast Petition

Local people across Rutherglen and Cambuslang have been concerned about the burst of planning applications for new mobile phone masts in the area. Planning guidance issued following the Stewart Report 10 years ago does not allow Planning Authorities to refuse applications or change the location of masts on health grounds.Robert Brown

Some countries limit the siting of masts near schools or nurseries – including New Zealand and parts of the USA.

Now a petition has been submitted by local Liberal Democrats to the Scottish Parliament asking for a review of the planning guidelines in the light of revised World Health Organisation (WHO) guidance.

A precautionary approach is surely required, given the increase in the number and strength of the masts.

Boundary Commission threat to Rutherglen and Cambuslang

Robert Brown is campaigning against Boundary Commission proposals which would see the Cambuslang East ward split away from the rest of our area and joined in with a new Hamilton Westminster Parliamentary seat. The rest of our area would form a new East Kilbride & Rutherglen seat.

Rutherglen and Cambuslang have always been part of a single Parliamentary seat – which has practical benefits in terms of access for constituents, links with local community groups and services and accountability. The proposed seat will split Cambuslang Town Centre down the middle and divide Cambuslang Community Council area into 2 Parliamentary seats.

Robert represented Liberal Democrat opposition to the move at the Boundary Commission Hearing in New Lanark in November.

The alternative proposal would see Rutherglen and Cambuslang kept together and joined with Blantyre and the west end of Hamilton.
